80 million Americans have some kind of venous disorder and 80% of these are cosmetic. Although most Americans do not have a major circulatory disorder, visible veins give the impression of aging and poor health. Most people want treatment, but are not aware that modern vein treatments are safe, effective, and virtually painless.
Women are nearly 3 times more likely than men to develop these conditions. The causes of unwanted veins are multi-fold and vary between individuals; however one the primary causes is hereditary. Some other factors that contribute to the onset of unwanted veins are work-related activities (prolonged standing/sitting), hormonal imbalances (often during pregnancy), and trauma to the immediate area.
There are three common types of enlarged surface veins: varicose, reticular, and spider veins. Varicose veins are at least one-tenth of an inch in diameter and may be as large as three-quarters of an inch. They often resemble twisted ropes and can form anywhere from the thigh to the ankle. Reticular veins, also known as blue veins or feeder veins are smaller than varicose veins but may also have a ropy appearance. They occur mainly on the back of the leg, usually around the knee. Reticular veins may branch into spider veins, also called telangiectasia, which are smaller than reticular veins. They look like red or blue spider webs on the skin’s surface and may occur on the face as well as the legs. All of these types of veins can be treated through traditional sclerotherapy.
Another type of enlarged veins, called perforator veins, protrude outside the skin but have underlying anatomy that requires other modes of treatment outside of traditional sclerotherapy. They can be treated by vein removal or by newer endovenous (in-the-vein) laser treatments. If you have this type of veins, Dr. Green will refer you to a doctor who can help with their removal.
In the past couple of years, there has been tremendous improvement in treatments for unwanted surface veins. Most patients who were dissatisfied with previous treatments are excited to learn that medical advancements have led to the development of superior, more effective treatment methods. These new and improved treatments are safe, cause significantly less discomfort, and are very affordable. Results are long-lasting and can be easily maintained after treatment. Additionally, side effects have been virtually eliminated as these newer agents are much more effective in collapsing and eliminating these veins quickly. Since these veins are very superficial to the skin, they typically do not carry a large blood supply, and therefore can be easily treated with a high degree of clearance and patient satisfaction.
A common misconception is that treating surface veins will be detrimental to healthy physiological functioning. However, surface veins essentially serve no biological purpose—they aren’t needed for the circulation of blood to the legs or facial areas. Therefore, when they are treated, normal vein circulation remains unaffected, so you can eliminate them without worry!
Although treatment will eliminate your unwanted veins, the underlying condition for having these types of veins will remain. Therefore, there is a very good possibility that you will need “touch-up” subsequent treatments from time to time thereafter. The time between the initial and subsequent treatments depends on the individual, but it is not uncommon to have up to a year of clearance.
